Cheek dermal fillers - is your face suitable?

Often referred to as simply ‘Dermal Fillers’, cheek filler is a procedure that uses a type of dermal filler designed to plump up, lift and smooth the cheek area of the face. The procedure works by adding volume to the facial structure around the cheek bones to give the illusion of a better defined bone structure, while also smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines.

What is cheek filler made out of?

There are many types of dermal filler on the market, many with various uses. The two recommended types of dermal filler for the cheek and under-eye area are Hyaluronic Acid and Polylactic Acid - both of which are considered temporary. At CQ Skin, we use a high quality Hyaluronic Acid filler type. However, due to the product being classed as a restricted Schedule 4 Drug, we are unable to disclose brand names that may be considered as advertising. Specific aspects regarding the type of dermal fillers that may be offered can be discussed during your consultation with a qualified professional.

How long does cheek filler last

There is no set time period that dermal fillers will last. Eventually, fillers will dissolve and be metabolised by the body and result length will vary depending on the filler type and other individual factors such as genetics and other individual habits and patters. Generally, however, dermal fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years before the results are no longer noticeable.

Are you a good candidate for the procedure?

If you are healthy and do not have a history of any chronic conditions, you may be a suitable candidate. A suitability assessment will be conducted by your chosen professional, along with a medical history and a discussion regarding your desired results. Your clinician will also give you a recommendation and an approximate cost for your consideration.

What to expect when you get dermal fillers

During your initial consultation your injector will complete a medical history and will discuss your desired results, risks & pricing as well as any prep & after care requirements with you. If you are happy to proceed you will then be given some additional written information regarding how to look after your dermal filler and injection sites after the fact and a consent form.

Preparation

In the 2 weeks prior to your appointment you may be asked to cease any blood thinning medications such as aspirin. If you take prescription blood thinners, please let your injector know during your consultation as this may require additional preparation prior to your appointment.

Procedure

Your injector will ask you to recline and will ask for your preference of topical numbing agents after preparing the injection site. While many products contain an agent, you may elect to have a topical numbing agent provided as well.

The injector will then begin the dermal injections which should take approximately 20 - 30 minutes depending on your tolerance and your desired results. You will see early results immediately but it can take many days for your filler to settle into its final position.

Immediately after the procedure you will notice some of your results, however there is also likely be some swelling associated with the injections that should subside in a day or two. You should be able to return to virtually normal daily life and will be able to drive after the procedure.

Aftercare

Try to avoid sleeping on your face / cheeks for a few days after the procedure. Instead, sleep on your back facing up to ensure that you do not accidentally move the filler around your face.

Aim to avoid excessively strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours post procedure and minimise the amount of moisture and touching to your face to decrease the risk of infection.

You should also seek advice from your injector regarding the use of skin care during the first 2 days.

What are the benefits of cheek filler?

  • Cheek filler has a smaller down time compared to implants

  • Cheek filler is not permanent, so if you change your mind or your look at a later date, you aren’t stuck with the result

  • There is a very low risk of serious infection or complication

  • Cheek fillers are less expensive than traditional plastic surgery

  • Cheek filler is buildable, so you can always add more if you want to

Cheek filler can be a great option for those looking to add more volume and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. While it may not be a suitable option for everyone, cheek fillers can be a great, semi permanent alternative to traditional surgical methods.

Cost

The cost of dermal fillers can vary across providers and the type of product that is used. On top of that it can vary by person depending on the amount needed and how often top ups are required, so it really is a personal process. Generally speaking, however, cheek dermal fillers are often more expensive than its lip counterpart because it requires a different type of filler and is a more specialised procedure that comes with facial balancing, great technique and a keen eye. For a full idea of costing, you should take advantage of our free consultation to discuss your options and pricing.
