Tear Trough dermal fillers - is this procedure right for you?

Tear trough filler. Sounds a little terrifying doesn’t it? Despite the name, this procedure is not about blocking your tear ducts in the name of beauty and has everything to do with plumping up the under eye area to reduce the appearance of dark circles.

While often a very effective way to reduce the appearance of dark, sunken in eye circles, this procedure has risks the same as any injectables treatment and requires a specialist and experienced hand due to the delicate area of the face that is being worked with.

How does the procedure work?

The procedure works by injecting a dermal filler of suitable type into the skin above the dark blood vessels under the eyes to brighten and fill in any hollowing to give a softer, more youthful appearance.

What can be improved with tear trough filler?

  • Dark Circles - Under eye darkness is caused by shadowing and visible blood vessels. By adding a layer of dermal filler in the area over the top of these blood vessels, a brighter, more youthful appearance can be achieved.

  • Hollowing - Fat reduction under the eye as a result of ageing and loss of volume and elasticity under the skin can cause the appearance of sagging, flat and hollow skin under the eyes. The use of filler in this area replaces the lost volume and can also be used out the outside (lateral) eye area.

  • Skin Texture - Filler underneath the eye can improve textural appearance, pore visibility, circulation and firmness which can all result in dull-looking skin in the area.

  • Wrinkles under the eyes - When using filler to replace lost volume under the eye, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles can be blended, restoring a youthful look to skin that is wrinkled for crepey-looking.

Who is a good candidate for Tear Trough Filler?

This procedure is suitable for a range of individuals at various stages of ageing. Whether you are a younger patient who is showing the early signs of hollowing and darkness or whether you are an older patient with poor skin texture, wrinkles and dark circles. It is important that you schedule a free consultation with a suitably qualified and experienced cosmetic doctor to determine your needs and next steps.

What to expect on the day

Your injector will thoroughly assess your lower eyelids, tear troughs and the texture and thickness of your skin to aid in determining the correct avenue of treatment for you in line with your desired result and goals. There are usually two methods that an injector may use to treat dark circles and hollowing of the eye area:

  1. Cheek filler to provide support for the under eye area which reduces the appearance of hollowed eyes.

  2. Tear trough filler to lift the skin and reduce fine line depth.

Your injector may recommend one or both approaches.

Before beginning the procedure your under eye area will be cleaned and a numbing agent can be applied if required. It is important to remember that your injectable does have a numbing agent built in but you are able to ask for additional topical anaesthetic if you would prefer it. Topical numbing agents take roughly 15 minutes to work and then your treatment will begin.

Injections will be focused around the areas that you wish to improve and you will be encouraged to view your progress as the procedure continues. Do not feel shy about requesting more volume in certain areas!

One your injections are complete, your injector will give you after care instructions and a follow up appointment in approximately two weeks will be scheduled to assess your results and provide any top ups if required.

In the days after your procedure, you may experience slight bruising and swelling, however this will resolve in a few days.

While you will notice the effects of the dermal filler immediately after your injections, we ask that you wait up to four (4) weeks to notice final results. This is to allow time for any swelling to subside and for the filler to integrate into your natural facial tissue.

Dermal fillers are not a permanent cosmetic solution and the length that your results last can be impacted by genetics, diet, metabolism and your lifestyle. While we use the highest quality dermal products to help you achieve your desired look, the results can last anywhere from 1 - 2 years.
