Treatments to reduce the appearance of scars

Scars can take on a multitude of shapes and sizes and are a lasting reminder of the body’s ability to heal itself. There are several types of scars, many of which can fortunately be treated either surgically or non-surgically in order to reduce or improve their appearance.

Types of scars

Keloid Scars - A raised scar that is formed as a result of the body over compensating during healing.

Contracture Scars - A scar that has the appearance of being pulled or stretched too tightly, often seen with burn injuries.

Hypertrophic Scars - A raised scar that is caused by excessive amounts of collagen.

Atrophic Scars - A sunken scar, often seen in severe acne scarring.

Non-Surgical treatments for scars

  • Chemical Peels

  • Dermal Fillers

  • Microneedling / Microdermabrasion

  • Laser treatments

  • Collagen injectables

Scar removal treatments per scar type

Keloid scars - Often respond well to steroid injections and/or laser therapy

Hypertrophic scars - Often respond well to steroid injections, microdermabrasion or laser therapy options

Atrophic scars - Often respond well to laser resurfacing treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermal fillers

Is scar removal safe?

Non surgical scar removal treatments are generally considered safe. However, any cosmetic treatment can carry risk and you should discuss these with your provider before undergoing any type of cosmetic treatment.

Expected results

It is important to know that whilst some types of scar removal procedures can produce quick or even immediate results, other treatments may require more than one session to get the desired results. In addition, some treatments are longer lasting with others. The various benefits and expectations should be discussed prior to undergoing any treatment.
