Microblading - Everything you need to know

If you’re reading this, chances are you are sick of having to pencil your brows in every single day. The time, not to mention money on products that may or may not be suitable, has you on the look out for and considering a longer lasting option to achieve perfect brows every time, without the hassle.

What is microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent form of cosmetic tattooing that does not use conventional tattoo equipment or ink. Microblading requires use of a tool that has very small and fine needles that are used to draw hair-like strokes, whilst also depositing a less concentrated semi-permanent pigment under the skin to give soft, delicate and realistic brows that don’t wash off!

Over the longer-term, your body will metabolise the special ink used during microblading, resulting in your brow look fading away over time, so interval touch-ups are required to maintain your desired look.

Who can have microblading?

The good news is that microblading is generally suitable for any skin type or tone within any shade range. Even if you currently have no natural brow, you may still be a candidate. A skilled cosmetic tattooist will create a custom colour using several shades to match your hair colour and give a natural, multi-dimensional look.

As with any cosmetic procedure though, there can be contraindications that may suggest microblading is not a suitable option for you. Your tattoo specialist will discuss these issues and other areas of concern with you prior to commencing your procedure.

How long do the results last?

The short answer is that microblading can last anywhere between 1 and 3 years, depending on your skin type, with oilier skin types fading the fastest. Ideally after your new brows are done, you will attend the clinic roughly 4 -6 weeks after for a check-in and touch up to make sure that you are happy with the results. After this, most people do not require another touch up for around 12 months.

What is the cost?

Costs vary between providers, however The Cosmetic Gypsy charges around $590 (at the time of writing) for a new set of brows with annual touch ups coming in at around $295. Prior to proceeding, your tattooist will discuss all the relevant costs with you.

What to expect during your treatment

The first step is to pencil in the brows to ensure that you are happy with the shape.

Once this is approved by you, you’ll be asked to lie in a completely sterile area to begin the microblading procedure. First, small superficial cuts will be made along your brow, putting colour in the arches to enable it to seep into the cuts just created. Don’t worry, precautionary pain relief or topical anaesthetic is an option if you need it!

If you have ever had your brows threaded, microblading is said to feel very similar. Not necessarily painful, but possibly uncomfortable.

It is important to remember that microblading, like all tattoo type procedures needs a 4-8 week period to heal before the desired results are seen and aftercare is very important in aiding to achieve your ideal results.

Aftercare

  1. For the first 24 hours, apply an antibacterial ointment to your brows, then follow this with a protective ointment for a further week.

  2. For 1 week after the appointment, try to avoid getting your brows wet and/or sweaty. If you must work out, then you should cover your brows with an ointment to help keep bacteria out and protect your fresh pigment.

  3. Avoid using facial acids or retinols while your brows heal and resist the urge to touch or pick the area.

While microblading is a great semi-permanent option for many people, it is not suited to everyone. However, there is a range of natural looking options available to ensure that you can achieve full brows - and ditch that eyebrow pencil or pomade!
