Lip Injections for Newbies

Making the decision to get lip fillers can be both exciting and terrifying. There are often a lot of questions that pop up and lead you to frantically search Google for answers. Questions like:

  • How big should I make my lips?

  • How much should it cost?

  • How do I know that I am going to get it done properly?

  • What are the side effects?

  • Will it hurt?

  • Can it be removed if my technician makes a mistake?

Certainly, getting lip fillers is not a decision that you should take lightly. In-fact, you should contact a range of clinics and ask not only for prices, but also any questions about the clinic, providers, services, aftercare and anything else that is on your mind to make sure that you are fully informed and importantly, comfortable.

Let’s run through some of the basics & overview of lip injections:

What are lip fillers?

Lip (or dermal) fillers are injections of a naturally occurring substance that is injected into your lips to give you a desirable natural looking result. Because the filler is derived from a bodily substance, when injected into your lips it instantly boosts and adds volume and lessens the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, giving you a softer, more youthful appearance. We use one of the finest grade crystal clear fillers on the market to ensure that you achieve the result that you desire.

What are the side effects?

As with any skin injection procedure, this is of course a risk of infection. We strive to minimise this by adhering to the strict infection control protocols of our parent accredited General Practice. Additionally, side effects that you may experience as a result of undergoing lip injections include:

  • Redness

  • Swelling

  • Pain

  • Tenderness

  • Firmness

  • Lumps/Bumps

  • Bruising

  • Discolouration

  • Itching

  • Bruising

  • Unintentional injection into a blood vessel - while rare, if this occurs the complications can be both serious and permanent.

Are there any benefits?

Lip fillers do not change your facial expressions and depending on the product selected and other biological factors, your fillers could last up to 6 months! Lip injections can also be used to correct facial features that you may not be happy with, however at CQ Skin, we believe that fillers simply enhance individual beauty.

Is it permanent?

Dermal fillers are a biodegradable substance. While rather long lasting, the product will be broken down by the body after a prolonged period of time. The life of your filler will depend on a number of factors, including:

  • The brand and thickness

  • The area treated

  • Skin type & condition

  • Lifestyle & age

It is possible to dissolve filler using an enzyme, however this treatment also comes with its own risks and should be discussed thoroughly before proceeding.

Will it hurt?

This one can be tricky to ascertain as it depends on the pain threshold of each individual. However, the brand of dermal fillers that we use combines a local anesthetic and we do everything possible to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible. You may feel a sting or a pinch as the needle goes in and then some pressure as the filler in being injected, but your experience will depend on a multitude of factors and while we aim to give the most positive experience possible, it is reasonable to expect that there may be some discomfort as part of the procedure.

Can I just walk-in to get lip fillers done?

NO. Dermal fillers are only available on prescription and as such all clients will require a consultation and assessment. This appointment ensures that you are fully informed, that your treatment plans and expectations are discussed. All clients must be 18 or over and not used on areas that are near areas of inflammation, skin disease or other issues. Clients should disclose their medical history during their consultation appointment as those who are immunocompromised or immunosuppressed may be more prone to post-injection infection. Fillers have not been tested for use on pregnant or breast-feeding individuals.

What should be done after treatment?

Post-procedure instructions will be clearly given to you should you decide to have a lip filler treatment. It is recommended that following your procedure you apply ice to the injection site for 5-10 minutes, every 30 minutes for approximately 6 hours to aid in reducing any swelling or bruising. Should your injector advise you to massage your lips after your procedure, be sure to follow those instructions carefully and contact the clinic if you need any further clarification.

How do I choose where to go?

There are many businesses in Australia that provide cosmetic services. We encourage all clients to ensure that they understand any risks involved and are confident that they are being treated by a qualified and registered individual. See this handy fact sheet for more information.
