Anti-wrinkle injections for Beginners

Botox CQ Skin

Anti-wrinkle substances have been tried and tested for over 20 years, yet there remains many myths and misinformation about the cosmetic treatment. Let’s delve into the nitty gritty and see what this anti-wrinkle stuff is really all about.

What is Botox®?

It might not sound all that appealing, since we all know that anti-wrinkle products are derived from Botulinum toxin. But where does the toxin come from? That would be a natural forming bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum. While it sounds rather gross on the whole, the truth is that these substances can, when used correctly, potentially relieve a multitude of medical issues such as migraines and excessive sweating in addition to reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

It is important to note that anti-wrinkle injections are not the same as dermal fillers. Fillers work to plump and add volume, while anti-wrinkle injections work to relax the muscles that are causing the lines on your face.

How does it work?

Anti-wrinkle substances block the neurotransmitters that signal a muscle to move. Albeit temporarily, the product essentially stops the ability to have full control over the facial muscles and expressions, thus no wrinkles! When done correctly, clients still have the ability to smile and frown without appearing to be frozen. If done incorrectly, this can change the look and feel of your expressions so it is important you see an expert.

Where can anti-wrinkle products be injected?

While it is most commonly used cosmetically to treat the appearance of wrinkles and lines by working to relax the muscles, it can also be used in the neck to soften lines, chin, jaw line, mouth lines, thin the face and lift the corners of the mouth. Additionally, it can also be used to treat chronic migraines and excessive sweating, among a list of other medical conditions.

How much anti-wrinkle product is needed?

There is no hard and fact rule on this, and it will depend on the location and the strength of the muscle where the wrinkle is located. As a guide you can expect an average of 20 units, lower for smaller areas like crows feet, which will need to be repeated approximately every 12 weeks.

Are the results instant?

Unlike dermal fillers,, anti-wrinkle injections do not yield instant results. You may see some differences early on, however typically it can take 24 - 48 hours for the product to start working its magic and roughly 3 days to a week before results are visible. You should allow 1 to 2 weeks for the full effects of your anti-wrinkle treatment to appear.

How long will it last?

You can expect the results of anti-wrinkle injections to last between 3 and 6 months. The repeat frequency will depend heavily on your body’s ability to metabolise the toxin.

What if I don’t like it? Can it be fixed?

There is no magic injection to reverse anti-wrinkle injections if it has been done incorrectly. This is why it is important to see a reputable and highly trained injector.

Any side effects?

An unexpected potential beneficial side effect to anti-wrinkle injections is the tightening of your pores. Not only do you appear more vibrant, rested and smoother, but because your pores are reduced your skin care and makeup sits much better on your skin. It will not, however, replace a great skin care routine, nor will it help with breakouts or pigmentation issues.

After your procedure you will likely notice some redness and slight inflammation - maybe even some light bruising - but this should subside quickly.

Anti-wrinkle injections hurt a little bit, but is a small prick with the pain disappearing almost immediately.

As with any procedure, there can be some unwanted side-effects. Be sure that you have undergone a thorough examination and discussed any potential side-effects before proceeding.

Food for thought: Long-term use of anti-wrinkle injections may cause the underlying muscles to lose their strength from lack of use and thus their ability to produce wrinkles. This is, of course, not guaranteed, but is an important consideration in deciding your treatment plan.

How much does it cost?

This depends on the clinic and the type of anti-wrinkle treatment used. At CQ Skin, we use a well known premium brand - be sure to contact the clinic for a current price.

When is the right age for anti-wrinkle injections?

There is no right of wrong answer for this question. In myth, this treatment is only for those in their middle aged years. In reality, many younger individuals are using Botox® as a way to stave off the wrinkles before they take hold. The question on whether to get anti-wrinkle injections or not is up to the individual and their comfort levels.

The bottom line

Cosmetic treatments are great of enhancing, sculpting or even ditching some conditions that you are not a fan of, however they should not replace a healthy diet, adequate hydration, exercise and a great skin care routine. It is also important that if you are considering anti-wrinkle treatment, that you consult with a suitably qualified injector in a well appointed, and sterile clinic.
